The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), in conjunction with the national and county governments, will upgrade and expand Itembe Airstrip in Bomet County with a view to easing transportation of goods and enhancing tourism in the South Rift. Bomet Governor Dr Joyce Laboso in the company of officers from KAA and Kenya Civil Aviation (KCA) toured the facility located five kilometres from the town centre. The runway of the facility will be expanded from the current 1 kilometre to 1.5 kilometres while the width will move from 18 to 30 metres. The facility has been lying idle for the last 27 years A report on the scope of works and cost of the expected expansion will be out in the next two weeks. Engineer Joel Wagai from KAA said the runway would be improved to bitumen standards. Currently, the runway which had been murrammed has overgrown grass owing to years of disuse.
