The fisheries department of the county government of Bomet has partnered with the Kenya Fisheries Services (KeFS) to restock Kapcheruse dam in Chepalungu Sub County and Ndanai dam in Sotik Sub County with fingerlings.

KeFS Sagana Fish Farm donated a total of 100,000 tilapia mixed -sex fingerlings to be stocked in 2 natural dams in South Rift region, Bomet County ; 50,000 fingerlings at Kapcheruse Dam and 50,000 fingerlings at Ndanai Dam.

The initiative aims to boost fish populations, support local fishers, and promote sustainable aquaculture.

The event was witnessed by the local administration (chief and ward administrator), the County Fisheries Department, the KeFS regional team, dam management committees, and local community members.

The fingerlings, produced through selective breeding, will begin multiplying after four months, with continuous harvesting expected after seven months.

To ensure sustainability, the KeFS regional team and the County Fisheries Department will offer training to the dam management committees on fishing methods, proper dam management, value addition, and marketing.

The restocking exercise was supervised by Charles Opanga – Senior Fisheries Officer, Fish Breeding, Sagana
Mackinon Kinyua – Corporal, Fisheries Guard, Sagana
Michael Ouma – Corporal, Fisheries Guard, Bomet, Director fisheries Felix Lagat, Stephen Njenga – Fisheries Officer Bomet and Daisy Chelagat – Fisheries Officer, Sotik Sub County.

The team later paid a courtesy call to the office of the Chief Officer for Agriculture, Dr. Kibet Sitienei, to highlight the significance of restocking fingerlings and reinforce efforts to sustain fish farming and boost aquaculture in the region.
