Distribution of Avocado & Mango seedlings to mitigate Climate Change

The County Government of Bomet has stepped up its efforts to mobilize people to join the government and the rest of the world in planting trees as a measure to mitigate the climate change phenomenon which has had disastrous effects on the climate not just in Kenya, but the world over.

Through the department of Water, Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change the County Government is partnering with the World Bank and other agencies through Financing Locally-Led Climate Action, (FLLoCA), a programme that seeks to distribute over 24000 Avocado and Mango tree seedlings to farmers across the County.

Speakikg to the press as he flagged off the distribution of seedlings in Bomet East Sub County, Governor Prof. Hillary Barchok said that the seedlings would only be issued to registered CBOs for easy monitoring and assessment of the project.

He added that his administration was still devising a way of bringing on board the rest of the farmers who are interested in the venture but may not have been registered under any CBO.

“To ensure that this venture succeeds, my administration will deploy enough extension officers to offer the necessary technical support to our farmers for them to maximize production, even as they conserve the environment”, said the governor.

Prof. Barchok led other leaders including MCAs, Philip Korir Livondo (Kipreres), Stephen Chang’morik (Longisa), Richard Ruto Kigaru (Chemaner), Roselyn Cheptoo (Rongena Manaret), Bernard Lang’at Makiche (Kembu), Wesley Kiprotich (Chepchabas) and Monica Taputany (nominated) in distributing seedlings to farmers in Kipreres, Longisa, Kembu and Chemaner wards.

From Bomet East Sub County, the exercise moves to Chepalungu Sub County on Tuesday and Sotik Sub County on Wednesday.
