The County Government of Bomet has reinforced its partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to advance climate-resilient agriculture through the Green Climate Fund (GCF)-supported Lake Region Economic Bloc (LREB) initiative.
During a strategic engagement, FAO officials paid a courtesy visit to the County Executive Committee and were received by Chief Officer for Agriculture, Dr. Kibet Sitienei. The meeting featured a detailed briefing on the regional project, which spans 14 counties and aims to benefit over half a million farmers through sustainable, low-carbon agricultural value chains.
Bomet’s focal point for the project, Everlyne C. Mwangangi, presented key insights into the county’s implementation strategy. Discussions emphasized sustainability, local impact, and the scaling of climate-smart agricultural practices.
As part of the visit, the FAO delegation toured Masare Multipurpose Cooperative Society in Bomet East—a model site showcasing community-led environmental restoration and cooperative-driven development.
The GCF-LREB initiative is a joint effort by FAO, the Government of Kenya, and various development partners. It targets key agricultural value chains including dairy, tea, coffee, poultry, fruit trees, and indigenous vegetables. In addition to improving livelihoods and creating green jobs, the project seeks to reduce carbon emissions and restore degraded ecosystems.
This engagement highlights the growing alignment between local and international efforts to strengthen climate resilience in Kenya’s agricultural sector and secure the livelihoods of vulnerable communities.
In attendance were Chief Officer for Agriculture Dr. Kibet Sitienei, Chief Officer for Cooperatives CPA Benard Koros, FAO representative led by Tian CIA, Director of Tourism Fredrick Korir, Commissioner Ngeno, CDA Evans Kiplagat, and staff from the department.
