Agriculture CS Andrew Mwihia Karanja was in Bomet County earlier today for the launch of Pyrethrum Solar Dryers that are expected to help farmers minimize post-harvest loses. The dryers will majorly be used in Bomet East Sub County that is mostly conducive for the crop.
During the launch that happened at the National Cereals and Produce Board Bomet Branch, the CS was in the company of Governor Prof. Hillary Barchok and Agricuiture PS, Dr. Paul Ronoh.
The CS observed that Bomet County was the number three largest producer of Pyrethrum in the country after Nakuru and West Pokot counties, challenging farmers to tap into the huge global market for pyrethrum, to make a kill.
Dr. Karanja also made a commitment that other than quality seeds for planting, his ministry will also ensure that farmers get quality fertilizer for them to maximize production, going forward.
On his part, Governor Barchok thanked the CS for his commitment to support farmers in Bomet, adding that his administration will provide extension services and any other technical support needed by the farmers for them to thrive.
Recently, the ministry of Agricuiture also introduced a branch of the Kenya Seed Company in Bomet town to help farmers source quality seeds for planting. According to Governor Barchok, the move saw many farmers around Bomet county make a bumper harvest owing to the quality of the seeds they planted last season.
The governor later led the CS and the PS to Tiroto, Merigi Ward of Bomet East Sub County for a farmers’ field day. The two events were coordinated by the department of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries headed by CECM Rosa Bett and CO Dr. Kibet Sitienei.
